关于肺活量,安静时人体出入肺脏的空气量约为400ml(一次呼吸量),在此基础上再努力猛吸,还可再吸入约1700ml(预备吸气量),而在呼出之后还可更进一步呼出1600ml(预备呼气量)。 Marathon
How it works
The longest race on the Olympic programme, athletes run a distance of 26 miles and 385 yards (42.195km).
The event takes place on the road and the finishing order of the race is determined by time.
Refuelling stations appear every 5km on a marathon course for the athletes.
The course can be looped, out and back or run over multiple laps. Sometimes the finish at a major championships marathon takes place in a stadium.
History
The event is named after the legendary 26-mile run made by a Greek soldier called Philippides (also known as Pheidippides) from the scene of the battle of Marathon to Athens, where he announced the defeat of the invading Persians. His mission completed, he promptly died of exhaustion after having apparently also run 150 miles back from Sparta the day before.
The organisers of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 devised the marathon race over 40km to celebrate the achievements of Ancient Greece.
The distance was later extended to the imperial measurement of 26 miles at the 1908 Olympic Games in London, and increased another 385 yards when the starting line was pulled back so it could be seen by the children in the Royal Nursery at Windsor and still finish in front of Queen Alexandra at the White City Stadium in west London. This distance was standardised at 26 miles 385 yards (42.195km) in 1921. The first women’s Olympic marathon took place at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
One of the greatest marathon runners of all time was Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia, who became the first black African to win Olympic gold by winning the marathon in a world record time at the 1960 Rome Games. Four years later he became the first man in history to successfully defend the title. Joan Benoit of the US made history at the 1984 Los Angeles Games by taking the inaugural women’s marathon title.

The 2024 Shanghai Jing'an Half Marathon will be held next week, according to a press conference on Wednesday.Recognized as an A1-class race by the Chinese Athletics Association, it will take place in Jing'an's Daning area on March 17, with nearly 5,000 runners. They will start at 7am at Daning Park, and pass local major roads and landmarks, such as Wanrong Road Tunnel, Daning Music Plaza and Baiyiqiao Village. They will return the park to finish the race, with the last five kilometers on the park's smart running track which is embedded with Internet of Things and big data for runners to get their health metrics and rankings. At the conference, Daning Function Zone signed strategic cooperation with Taihu National Tourism Resort in Suzhou and Wuxi cities in Jiangxu Province, granting female runners who finish the half marathon in under an hour and 50 minutes and male runners who finish in under an hour and 30 minutes access to either one of races held in Suzhou and Wuxi.

But with the right training and preparation, the marathon should be an exciting and satisfying (if challenging) journey to the finish line.“Approach the race with joy and gratitude, not as a life-or-death thing,” says Molly Seidel, an Olympic Marathon medalist. “A lot of people are overly serious, but you can still be focused and have fun with it.” So take a deep breath, and read on for our best tips, tricks, and expert advice to help you sail through 26.2 The Complete Guide to Crushing Your First Marathon Starts HereThe Golden Rules of First-time Marathon TrainingOur Favorite Marathon GearHow to Avoid the Dreaded WallPros Tell Us Their Pre-26.2 RitualsIs the 20-mile Training Run Overrated? The Best Marathons to Get Hooked on 26.2I Feared the Marathon. Then I Ran It Anyway.Joe HaleCoach Andrew Kastor lives in California with his wife, Deena, Olympic Marathon bronze medalist. The Golden Rules of First-time Marathon TrainingGive Yourself 20 Weeks to TrainBeginners should start training 20 weeks out from the race, says Andrew Kastor, coach of the Asics Mammoth Track Club in Mammoth Lakes, California. This 4.5-month-long training cycle builds up your endurance and aerobic capacity—the secret sauce in a marathon.“A lot of people could go out there and drag themselves through a 5K, but it’s much harder to do a marathon if you haven’t put in the work,” says Rob Watson, ex-pro marathoner and head coach forMile2Marathon in Vancouver, British Columbia. “The more time you give yourself to do it, the more prepared you will be on race day. You don’t want to cram for a marathon.”Get Comfortable Running at Least 18 MilesLong runs accomplish two things, says Kastor. “Number one: gain confidence. And number two: train your body to recognize what it’s like to run on fatigued legs—because when you get about 20 miles into a marathon, your legs are like stubs.”Slowly build up to 18 to 20 miles for two long runs, Kastor says. At the start of your training cycle, take your most recent long run and alternate adding one and two miles each week, until you hit at least 18 miles. (So if your longest run is 10 miles, run 11 the next week, then 13, then 14, and so on.)After you hit at least 18, step down to about 13 miles for three weeks, Kastor says. Then go back up for one more 18-miler to close out the training cycle.Find a Support SystemWorking with a running group or a coach by your side will help you go the distance. “Sometimes you’re pushing the group, and sometimes you’re getting pulled along,” Watson says. “But either way, your training partners are right next to you, breathing and working just as hard.” Ask your local running store or search social media to help you find the right crew.Working with others can also give you accountability, structure, and confidence. “A marathon buildup on paper could look perfect, but when it comes down to actually doing it, you might get sick, have work stress, or have life stress,” Watson says. “You’re going to have to change your plan, and your coach’s experience can guide you through it, while giving you the confidence that you’re still doing it right.”“The more time you give yourself to train, the more prepared you will be on race day. You don’t want to cram for a marathon.”Take Two Days a Week Off From Running “You need to allow your body time to adapt,” Watson says. A day without running may not feel productive, but your body is recuperating from any minor muscle tears or tissue damage that’s occurred during your training and getting used to the strength you’ve built up. Plus, it allows your mind to reset, too, and keep your motivation high. It all adds up to a faster race time.New marathoners should dedicate one day to a cross-training activity like biking, swimming, or yoga, Kastor says, and take a full day off each week. On these rest days, foam-roll, stretch, eat well, sleep well, and let your mind and body heal from the stress of marathon training.Add Marathon Pace to Select Long Runs Race-day success, Kastor says, “comes down to the long runs, training, and getting used to the pace.” Run six to eight miles at marathon pace during your long runs. As your body gets more familiar with race pace, it also becomes more efficient at it. It will also get used to the pace on already-tired legs.Schedule just two or three of these marathon-pace long runs during your training cycle, says Jeff Gaudette, a coach and former Hansons-Brooks Original Distance Project pro runner. And spread them out by at least two weeks, with the last one occurring no closer than three weeks before your race.Another option for an 18- to 20-miler with marathon pace is a progressive long run, Gaudette says. Take the first couple miles easy, then miles 4 to 12 at 15 seconds slower than goal marathon pace, miles 12 to 18 at goal pace, and the last 8 miles at 10 seconds faster than goal pace. This run is best implemented in the final eight weeks of your training plan. Many beginners feel nervous about running out of energy before they make it to the finish line. The progressive long run is one of the best ways, Gaudette says, to train your body and mind to push through the hardest part of the race: the last few miles. This is also a good option for runners using longer training plans to help reinvigorate your marathon prep leading up to race day.Train for the CourseThe best way to prepare for a race’s unique challenges is by running the course. But if that’s not possible, checkout the topography. “It’s about being prepared, controlling the controllable,” Watson says. “Take the Berlin Marathon versus the New York City Marathon. They’re both 26.2 miles, but Berlin is pancake flat, so you just have to practice sticking to a pace, whereas NYChas a lot more hills, so you have to prepare for the ups and downs.”For hilly courses, Kastor recommends simply routing your long runs over a few hills. “If you’re training in Kansas for a hilly marathon, you might have to get creative with it,” Kastor says. “Run up parking structures, do stairs, or go to an athletic club and bump up the incline on the treadmill.”—Ally SpiroffTrevor RaabOur Favorite Marathon GearOPTP Pro-Roller Soft Density Foam Roller $60 at AmazonThe 36-inch length makes it easy to reach those sore muscles without having to reposition the roller. You’re bonking. It even happens to pros, like Keira D’Amato, the American record holder in the marathon until Emily Sisson bested the mark at the Chicago Marathon, who bonked around mile 20 of her first marathon in 2013 and had to walk most of her last six miles.Bonking happens when your body runs out of glycogen, which is energy stored in your muscles and liver, says Alison Helms, Ph.D., a certified personal trainer and creator of the Women’s Running Academy. Our bodies store about 2,200 calories in glycogen, which is good for about 18 to 20 miles. Once your body’s main fuel source is gone, your brain “wants you to stop and turns on all the signals,” Helms says. You may cramp up, feel fatigued, or even have GI problems.Bonking may be common, but it’s far from inevitable if you fuel properly and run smart.Start Refueling as Early as 20 Minutes In “If you run out of carb stores, it’s really hard to get them back,” says Kastor. So take in your fuel before you need it—as early as 20 minutes into the race. And aim to take in 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrates—or two energy gels—every hour during the race.Dehydration can be just as nasty as—and more dangerous than—bonking, so combine your fluid intake with your gels, says Monica Reinagel, a sports nutritionist based in Baltimore, taking one to two cups of the water or sports drink on offer at every aid station along the course.Melisa LyttlePlan Out and Practice Refueling Kastor has his athletes find out what fuel and fluids will be served along the course to help them gauge how much nutrition they need to carry. Then they train with those exact products and flavors throughout their training cycles. If you do need to supplement the aid stations, make sure you have room to carry your fuel. Watson recommends storing your gels in fuel belts, pockets, sports bra, or arm warmers. And practice your fuel plan during long training runs to make sure your stomach can handle it, that your gear is comfortable, and that you’re able to get food into your mouth while running.Check Your Pace Regularly Kastor recommends checking your pace around the first 5K—are you going too fast? “It’s not too late to slow down” at this point, he says. If you get to mile 10 and already feel like you’ve been pushing too hard, “chances are pretty high that you’ll hit a wall,” says Diane Nukuri, an Olympic Marathoner for Burundi and three-time top-eight finisher at a World Major Marathon.“If you get to 30K feeling good,” Kastor says, “I give everyone the green light to pick it up by 5 to 15 seconds per mile, and try and hold that pace all the way to the finish line. You can make up a couple minutes in the last few miles.”Focus on You Your brain is busy during a run, monitoring blood volume, sweat rates, core temperature, blood sugar, and stress hormones, says Dan Benardot, author of Nutrition for Serious Athletes. “Mental fatigue will lead to the perception of muscle fatigue.”It comes down to mind over matter, says Christian Zepp, Ph.D., sports scientist and sports psychology expert. Visualize “positive alternatives to the wall, such as anticipating a runner’s high at certain mile markers,” Zepp says.Shift your focus internally and use positive self-talk to motivate yourself back on track, he added. Tell yourself to keep calm or focus on highly specific aspects of the race, like your running form or the specific pace for the current mile you’re in, until you pass the wall by.Carb-Load the Week BeforeIn the week leading up to the race, 70 percent of your total calories should come from carbs, Helms says. (For a 150-pound runner eating 2,700 calories a day, for example, that’s about 450g of carbs.) Two to three days before the race, increase to 80 to 90 percent from carbs (for that same runner, that’s 540 to 850 grams of carbs). Bread, pasta, oats, and rice are all solid carb-loading choices. —A.S.Pros Tell Us Their Pre-26.2 Rituals2021 AND 2022 GRANDMA’S MARATHON CHAMPIONDakotah Lindwurm“I braid my hair down my back, a tradition for me every race since my first race as a freshman in high school. I eat oatmeal, peanut butter, and a banana roughly two and a half hours before the race starts.”Maddie Meyer / Stafffourth at the 2021 New York City MarathonElkanah Kibet“The day before, I drink water early in the morning and all afternoon, but no more water by 6 p.m. so I can sleep at night. I eat at least two hours before the race.”Andy Lyons / Stafffifth-fastest male American marathoner in 2021Nico Montañez“I wear these specific blue socks with black trim, eat a bagel and peanut butter the morning of the race, eat a Chipotle steak burrito the night before, and check three times that I have every-thing in my bag for race day.”–As Told to Ally SpiroffJZ SNAPZ, LLCJohnny ZhangIs the 20-mile Training Run Overrated?During their training cycles, many coaches—including most featured here—tell their athletes to hit 20 miles at least once. “There’s a big psychological benefit on race day to completing the 20-mile training run,”Kastor says. It’s a major confidence booster, Watson agrees. But is 20 really a magic number?“It’s just a round number,” says Kevin Hanson, coach and co-author of Hansons Marathon Method. The book and method have guided thousands of amateur runners to marathon finish lines with training plans that never ask for more than a 16-mile long run.“The biggest drawback to our plan is convincing people that 20 is just a number,” he says. The Hansons method prioritizes consistent work over the course of a week to build overall mileage, rather than emphasizing one extra-long workout in a week.A 20-mile run is also overkill for many new marathoners. For runners averaging 10-minute miles, a 20-miler will take almost 3.5 hours. “Running over three hours for a training run has shown to have a diminishing point of returns,” says Roberta Groner, a coach for Central Park Track Club in New York City and a pro-marathoner.Hanson also has his athletes practice their marathon pace over and over again, both “on days when you’re tired and on days when you’re hungrier than you should be at the start.” This way, they get used to running on sore legs as well as holding back when fresh. “Often times training plans have you take the day off before a20-miler, which is like a mini taper,” Hanson says. Instead, Hanson wants your long run to feel like a simulation of the end of the race, when your legs are really feeling the fatigue. So should we all for-sake the 20-miler? Not if you enjoy that style of training plan or it works better for your schedule. Programs featuring a handful of long runs in the neighborhood of 20 miles are more feasible for the runner who amps up their training on the weekends, Kastor says.Or, if you’re the type of runner who wants to spread their training evenly across the weeks—like Groner, who found the Hansons method was better for her as she was raising young kids—then dive into the Hansons approach. —A.S.Courtesy Big Sur Marathon FoundationA celebration around mile 20 of the scenic Big Sur International Marathon. The Best Marathons to Get Hooked on 26.2Athens MarathonAthens, Greece NovemberAthens is home to both the legend of the marathon and the first marathon race—held in 1896 to open the Olympics’ modern era. Then dig into some celebratory Ben & Jerry’s at the finish line. —A.S. Jessica PonsI Feared the Marathon. Then I Ran It Anyway.A human being in this modern world has plenty to worry about: societal collapse, environmental disaster, any number of future Batman reboots. But there are some possibilities that we fail to consider, fears we don’t know we have until they move into our heads, and then we are immediately envious of our earlier, untroubled selves. What I’m saying is, I didn’t appreciate signing up for my first marathon and then finding out my toenails might fall off.A first marathon is an intimidating task for even a seasoned runner. For the rest of us, the race date looms on the calendar and stirs up fears new and old, well-founded and implausible. We are correct to have concerns when we take on our first marathon, and we are correct to have even more serious concerns once we fully comprehend what we’ve gotten ourselves into. In a sense, conquering those concerns is the real challenge a first-time marathon runner must face. But if I can do it, so can you. When I signed up to do my first, I was aware that the training process would be a grueling one. I knew to anticipate sore knees and tight hips. It’s supposed to be nearly impossible; remember, the race gets its name from the story of Philippides, a Greek messenger who ran the 26-ish miles from Marathon to Athens in order to announce his army’s victory over the Persians, and then died right after. I knew not to expect an extra-long walk in the park, and if the paintings and sculptures are to be believed, young Phil was ripped, so what chance did I have? Plus, I’d chosen the New York City Marathon, the most popular one in the world, the one in the city where I’d spent my whole twenties, which raised the equally gruesome possibility that I might be seen at my pinkest and most vulnerable by thousands of spectators, including people I might have dated. When I started telling people I was thinking about doing a marathon, I received nothing but encouragement. But when I actually signed up for it, the very moment my payment was processed and it was too late to turn back, that’s when I started hearing the stories. The friend from college whose nipples started bleeding at mile 14. The beloved uncle who lost control of his bowels at mile 23. And the toenails. So many lost toenails. The images that played in my mind were bone-chilling. I knew that I would be pushing my body to its very limits, but I had not considered specifically how my body might push back. And there was no escape. I’d already told everyone I’d ever met that I was doing the New York City Marathon, and the costs of hiring extras, building sets, and staging a fake one for a photo shoot were prohibitive. The only available exit was on the other side of the finish line. I was going to have to do the damn thing. What saved me was remembering my why. I had signed up for a challenge. What saved me was remembering my why. I hadn’t signed up for a marathon out of a deep love for running, or competition, or registration fees. I had signed up for a challenge. I’d settled into a satisfying professional life, and I found myself choosing to do the things I knew I could do well, and delegating or declining the rest. My vanity and pride had begun to deny me the simple thrill of slowly learning how to do something new. My soul craved the experience of completing a task in November that I could not possibly have completed in May. We need these things. They keep us growing. As I trained, I found that those grisly physical complications weren’t what I was worried about anyway. Those were just the surface fears, the ones I was more comfortable engaging with. And honestly, they’re pretty easy to avoid: lube up those nips, eat sensibly in the days before the race, make sure you have access to a toilet that morning, and you’re good to go. (There’s not much you can do about the toenails.)There’s nowhere to go but inward when everyone else is in bed and you’re running an 18-miler. When I was alone out on the road and the fatigue had worn down my defenses, I found I’d been masking my real fears, and those were much more disturbing: What if I couldn’t actually do what I set out to do? What if this made me take a good honest look at my physical limitations? What if I could have done it last year, but sometime between then and now I began my inevitable physical decline? What if I’m just not good enough? What if I never was? Failure is a valuable opportunity for growth and self-knowledge, and it absolutely fucking sucks. Nobody wants to fail, or fall, or give up, or be forced by paramedics to give up, and for sure nobody wants to do those things in front of thousands of spectators with cowbells and Bloody Marys. A marathon is a challenge, a real challenge, and real challenges are terrifying. There’s just no getting around it.The answer is to put one foot in front of the other. Here’s what I did: I called my friends who had come to cheer, and I asked them to put themselves somewhere between mile 20 and the finish line, that 6.2-mile mystery zone that you don’t train for. I knew I’d need encouragement then, and I knew it would need to be from familiar faces. I also gave them strict instructions not to tell me I looked good. “We will both know you are lying,” I said, “and it will make us all feel bad.”But the most important thing that I did was to train properly, and then trust it. Trust myself. This is the magic bullet, I’m afraid: Do the training diligently, let it ruin a few months’ worth of weekend mornings, and that’s how you buy yourself a smooth race day. You overcome your worst fears that way. You might even have fun. Just take it one step at a time.Ultimately, I only lost two toenails. They grew back. Pretty painless, really. —Dave HolmesDave HolmesEditor-at-LargeDave Holmes is Esquire's L.A.-based editor-at-large. His first book, "Party of One," is out now. Olympics.com looks at how the pair's stats stacked up side by side.4 minBy Sean McAlisterEliud KIPCHOGEBoxing (2023 Getty Images)“Not every day is Christmas,” said Eliud Kipchoge as he reflected on the disappointment of a 10th-place finish at the 2024 Tokyo Marathon on Sunday 3 March. However, for fellow Kenyan Benson Kipruto, who won the race in a new course record 2:02.16, this was arguably the greatest late holiday gift of his career to date.
While Kipchoge is a legend in the sport of athletics, with two Olympic gold medals and 10 Marathon Major victories, Kipruto is one of several Kenyans putting pressure on the marathon great with their rapid performances over the 42.195km distance.
Six of the top 10 finishers in the Tokyo Marathon men’s race are from Kenya, with five finishing above Kipchoge who ended the race in a time of 2:06:50. It’s fair to say, these are uncharted waters for an athlete so used to dominating whenever he competes.
The Kenyan selectors have not yet chosen their team for Paris 2024 and while the name Kipchoge carries so much weight it would be a surprise if he does not make it to the Olympic starting line, but performances like the one witnessed on Sunday mean there are no guarantees in a sport that is notoriously difficult to find top-level consistency in.

The 2024 Tokyo Marathon can almost be said to have been a race of two halves.
Kipruto and Kipchoge both went out with the leading group at a blistering pace, sharing split times of 14:16, 14:14 and 14:22 over the first 15km in a world record pace.
However, by kilometre 20 a small gap had opened up between the two, with Kipchoge dropping 5 seconds off the pace. Still, by the time they both passed the half-marathon mark, the gap of 14 seconds would have been worrying but not race-ending for Kipchoge.
It was in the second half of the race that Kipruto continued to shine while the Olympic champion faded.
By the 25th kilometre the gap between the two was one minute and 21 seconds as Kipchoge struggled to keep up with the race leaders. At the time, Kipruto’s split was remarkably consistent with the first half of the race, as he posted a time of 14:25 between kilometres 20 and 25. For his part, Kipchoge had begun to slip backwards fast, with splits of 15:31, 15:49, 15:40 and 15:47 between kilometre 20 and 40.
Kipruto himself did begin to slow from the initial pace that would have brought him close to the world record, however a slowest split of 14:48 over the last 20 kilometres was still over a minute faster than Kipchoge’s slowest of 15:49.
The final gap between the two at the race's end was over four-and-a-half minutes as Kipruto claimed his third career Marathon Major win.Benson Kipruto vs Eliud Kipchoge - splits and timesWhy did Kipchoge underperform in Tokyo?
While Kipchoge made no concrete excuses for not reaching the heights he is used to at the 2024 Tokyo Marathon, he did cryptically admit that “something happened in the middle of the race.”
Whether that was an injury or the heat of a balmy day in Japan hampering his performance is just speculation. As would be the idea that age is finally beginning to catch up with the reigning Olympic champion after his legendary 11-year career running marathons.
However, while Kipchoge admitted it is “too early” to assess his chances of success at Paris 2024, this isn’t the first time he has bounced back from disappointment to land on the winner’s step of the podium.
He finished eighth in the 2020 London Marathon and sixth in the Boston Marathon in 2023, returning from that first loss to set a world record in Berlin in 2022 and triumphing in Berlin again late last year following his loss in Boston.
Kipruto's performance will have caught the eyes of the Kenyan selectors who have a rich pool of talent to choose from. He remains hopeful that he will be one of the three names his National Olympic Committee calls up for the Olympic marathon in August this year.
“I think I’m ready for Paris,’ he said. “But that relies on my country for selection.”
As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.

If you’ve been googling ‘how long is a marathon?’ the chances are you’ve been inspired by marathon season — in the next month, the London Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and New York City Marathon are all taking place. The London Marathon is first — it takes place on Sunday (October 3) — and if you’ve been swept up in marathon fever, here’s everything you need to know about the distance. New to running? Here are the best running shoes to invest in How to track runners at the Chicago Marathon 2021How to run faster — 7 mistakes you’re probably makingHow long is a marathon? A marathon is 26.2 miles or 42.19 kilometers. It’s an awfully specific distance for a reason and wasn’t set until the 20th century. The modern marathon was inspired by the legend of an ancient Greek messenger in 490 B.C., who raced from Marathon to Athens (a distance of nearly 25 miles) with news of a Greek victory over an army of Persians. After finishing the run, he collapsed and died. To commemorate the achievement the 1896 Olympic marathon was 40 kilometers. In 1908, however, during the Olympic Games in London, the course was extended, allegedly because Queen Alexandra wanted the race to start on the lawn of Windsor Castle so the younger members of the British Royal Family could watch the runners. The race finished in front of the royal box at the Olympic stadium, which happened to be 26.2 miles away. How long, on average, does it take to run a marathon? According to data that looked at race results from more than 70,000 events from 1986 to 2018, the average marathon finish time for runners in the United States is 4 hours and 42 minutes. The average male marathon finish time in the US is 4 hours and 31 minutes and the average female marathon finish time in the US is 4 hours and 57 minutes. The men’s world record for the marathon distance is a time of 2:01:39, set by Eliud Kipchoge at the 2018 Berlin Marathon. The female world record in the marathon is 2:14:04, set by Brigid Kosgei at the 2019 Chicago Marathon. If you were to walk 26.2 miles, it’s likely that it would take you between six and nine hours. Walking at a brisk pace, you’d probably cross the finish line in 6-7 hours, but at a natural walking pace, it would take much longer. How long is a half marathon? A half marathon is 13.1 miles or 21.09 kilometers. According to the same data, collected by RunRepeat, for runners from the US, the average half marathon finish time is 2 hours and 10 minutes. To drill down further, the average male runner from the US will run a half marathon in 2 hours and 2 minutes, whereas the average female runner will cross the finish line in 2 hours and 16 minutes. The male world record for the half marathon distance is 57:32, run by Kibiwott Kandie at a half marathon that was part of the Valencia Marathon in 2020. The female world record for the half marathon is 1:04:31, set by Ababel Yeshaneh in the 2020 Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon. How long is a 10K?A 10K is 10 kilometers long, or 6.21 miles. The average 10K finish time in the US is 1 hour and 1 minute. For men, the average time is slightly faster, at 58 minutes and for women, it’s slightly slower at 1 hour and 6 minutes. The world record in the 10K is 26 minutes and 11 seconds for men, set by Joshua Cheptegei, or 29 minutes and 17 seconds for women, set by Almaz Ayana. How long is a 5K? A 5K is five kilometers long, or 3.1 miles. The average 5K time for runners in the US is 39 minutes. For men, the average is faster, at 35 minutes and for women, the average is slower at 41 minutes. The world record in the 5K is 12:35.36 for men, set by Joshua Cheptegei, and 14:06.62 for women, set by Letesenbet Gidey. Inspired? The marathon is a beloved race distance for dedicated runners. It draws one-and-done runners looking to check off an impressive bucket list goal as well as seasoned marathoners who are well known in their social circles as running at least one marathon per year.
As runners train for the race, logging mile after mile, whether on Sunday long runs or Tuesday tempo workouts, they can’t help but have at least a fleeting thought of marathon history and its origin and development.
Many runners are familiar with the lore of Pheidippides as the origin story of the marathon, but beyond that, our minds go blank about marathon history.
Yet, the history of the marathon has a rich and storied past. There’s all sorts of interesting nuggets of information about marathon history that can deepen even the most diehard marathoners’ appreciation for the famed 26.2-mile distance.
In this article, we will take a trip back through the annals of time, looking briefly at marathon history, from the origins of the marathon to the popular event enjoyed by millions of runners each year that it is today.
We’re going to cover:
Who Ran the First Marathon Ever?
When Was the First Marathon?
Why Is A Marathon 26.2 Miles?
Marathon History Outside Of the Olympics
Let’s get started!
Who Ran the First Marathon Ever?
The history of the marathon begins some 2,500 years ago.
As the legend goes, the origins of the marathon date back to 490 BC, in the city of Marathon, Greece.
There, the Persian Empire, under Darius I, deployed a massive fleet, manned by 18,000-25,000 soldiers.
In one of the most significant battles in the classic world, the much smaller 10,000-man Athenian army set out to defend their turf.
The Athenians called upon reinforcements from Sparta, but due to various logistical challenges like the incredible distance between Marathon and the Peloponnese, additional manpower never arrived, leaving the Athenians stuck facing the attack on their own.
Despite the odds, the Athenians prevailed in what was aptly called the Battle of Marathon, due to its location.
Here’s where Pheidippides enters the story of the first marathon runner in history.
As a herald, also known as a hemerodrome, Pheidippides was basically paid to run from place to place to deliver messages, as modern forms of communication didn’t yet exist.
According to the legend, Pheidippides was summoned by the Athenian army to call for more reinforcements from Sparta, theoretically tasking him with running all the way from Marathon to Sparta (153 miles over rough terrain, including at least one notable mountain).
He would have then had to run back to return to Athens to deliver the news that the Spartans weren’t going to come provide support.
However, in the simplified version of the origins of the modern marathon, this Athens-to-Sparta run is omitted.
Instead, the story goes that after witnessing the surprising triumph of the vastly outnumbered Athenian soldiers, Pheidippides ran from the battle site in Marathon to the Acropolis in Athens to deliver the news to the government.
Upon arriving at the Acropolis, Pheidippides is said to have uttered something like “chairete, nikomen (“hail, we are the winners”), or “Joy, we are winners,” and then immediately collapsed and died.
So why the marathon distance?
The distance from the battlefield in Marathon to the Acropolis in Athens was roughly 40 kilometers or 25 miles.
When Was the First Marathon?
Between the potential genesis of the marathon with Pheidippides’ heroic run in 490 BCE and the first official organized marathon race, some 1,500 years passed.
Returning to the origin country of the marathon, Greece, the first competitive marathon wasn’t staged until just before the 1896 Olympics held in Athens.
The 1896 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece is considered the start of the modern era of the Olympics.
The ancient Olympic Games, which ran from 776 BCE to 393 AD, also occurred in Greece, but they did not include foot races nearly as long as the marathon.
In fact, the longest races in the ancient games were about 5 kilometers.
Interestingly, although that marathon distance is now the firmly-established 26.2-mile or 42.195-km distance, the first official marathon at the Olympics in Athens was indeed 40 kilometers, or roughly 25 miles.
Recall that this is the distance Pheidippides was said to run between Marathon and Athens when delivering the news of Greek victory, so the original organized marathon distance was chosen to commemorate the fabled run of the fleet-footed messenger.
But, how did the first marathon race come to be?
Whether a true story or a legend, the Pheidippides’ fatal run from Marathon to Athens was eulogized in a poem written by Robert Browning.
Given the popularity of his works at the time, and the undeniable draw of the legend of Pheidippides’ marathon run, the idea of resurrecting the marathon distance and incorporating it into the revival of the Olympic Games was very appealing and apropos to Baron Pierre de Coubertin.
De Coubertin was a Frenchman, who was involved in the genesis of those first Olympics in the modern era, believing that sport made people stronger and built national character.
He looked to the military successes of Britain and Prussia relative to the weakness and defeat of his native nation, France in terms of national standings, noting that Britain had a strong emphasis on sporting endeavors in public schools.
Needless to say, De Coubertin set out to make sport mandatory in French schools and to create an international sporting event resemblant of the ancient Olympics.
He formed an International Olympic Committee in 1894, where the delegates agreed to establish the first modern Olympics in Athens two years later, and repeated events every four years.
In terms of the first marathon at those games, Michel Bréal, one of the delegates on the committee, was the man who championed the idea of having a long-distance race.
As a history buff, Bréal had read about the legend of Pheidippides, and wrote in a letter to Coubertin in 1894:
“If you go to Athens, you could try and see if a long distance run from Marathon to Pnyx could be organised. That would emphasize the character of Antiquity… I, personally, claim the honour of sponsoring the marathon trophy.”
The Greek government was in favor of the Olympic Games as well as the marathon race as a means of bolstering national pride.
Tons of money was spent erecting a marble replica of the stadium at Olympia.
Accordingly, the first Olympic Marathon was a 40-km run from Marathon Bridge to the new stadium in Athens.
Although the first organized marathon is usually cited to be the actual running at the event at the 1896 Olympic Games, a month before the race, a small Greek Championship event was held.
In this foot race, 11 competitors ran from Marathon to Athens, completing what was then the marathon distance. Therefore, this was the first marathon ever.
Just two weeks later, there was an official marathon trial race on the course, with 38 competitors toeing the line.
The winner ran 3:11:27.
The marathon distance remained at roughly 25 for the next few Olympic Games.
Why Is A Marathon 26.2 Miles?
So, what about the piece of marathon history concerning the distance? How and when did the marathon change from 40 kilometers to 26.2 miles?
The marathon distance was changed to 26.2 miles for the 1908 Olympic Games in London.
As this part of marathon history goes, the race course needed to be extended to accommodate the British royal family.
Allegedly, Queen Alexandra requested that the marathon race event would start on the lawn of Windsor Castle.
Some say this was to allow the royal children to watch the start of the race from the window in the nursery.
The race course was slated to finish in front of the royal box at the Olympic stadium, and the distance between these two points along the route clocked in at exactly 26 miles and 385 yards, which is how the marathon became 26.2 miles (the 0.2 is the 385 yards).
Interestingly, rather than resorting back to the original 40 kilometers or 25 miles, the increased marathon distance ended up sticking for the next several Olympic Games.
Furthermore, in 1921, the length for a marathon became formally standardized at 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometers) rather than 40 kilometers or 25 miles.
Marathon History Outside Of the Olympics
Outside of the Olympic games themselves, the marathon also has an interesting and storied past.
While the first organized marathon didn’t take place until 1896 at the Olympic games in Athens, the marathon race for lay people wasn’t far behind.
The first marathon road race outside of the Olympics was the Boston Marathon, which had its inaugural running in 1897, just one year later.
The Boston Marathon is the longest-running annual marathon in the world.
However, it wasn’t until 75 years later, in 1972, when women were first allowed to officially enter the Boston Marathon.
Even further behind, the first Olympic marathon for women wasn’t held for yet another 12 years, in 1984.
Although the modern era of the women’s marathon is notably short, in the couple of weeks leading up to the first Olympic marathon in Athens in 1896, two women, Melpomene and Stamathis Rovithi, are reported to have run the course from Marathon to Athens.
What was once a race distance rarely contested outside of the Olympic Games, the Boston Marathon, or a few other isolated pockets of the world, is now raced year-round in countries all over the word.
In fact, according to Running USA, there were over 1,100 marathons in the USA alone in 2016.
Now that you’re all caught up with your marathon history, when will you be crossing the finish line?
